5 Essential SEO Best Practices for Wellness Websites

Google gets more than 1 billion health questions every day. So, making your wellness site visible on search engines is very important. A survey by Moz showed 75% of people don’t look past the first search page. This means being on the first page is critical for wellness sites to find their audiences.1 This article […]

The letters S E O

If you have a website, you’ve most likely heard the terms SEO, SEO strategy, improving SEO, etcetera. What does it mean, why is it so important, and how can it help healthcare specialists specifically?

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. When done correctly, it brings the right audience to your website, organically, without having to pay for advertisement.

Using specific words or “keywords” on your website homepage, in your blog articles, and in your photo descriptions improve your website’s visibility on search engines like Google.

Why is SEO Strategy Important?

When SEO is used correctly, it can help you not only educate your audience about a specific topic, but it directs them to you as an authority of the subject and attracts more patients to your practice.

For example, say you are a chiropractor that sees a lot of patients with tension headaches. If you include information about tension headaches on your website, ideally your blog, then the next time someone “Googles” “how to treat tension headaches,” they’ll easily be able to find your website, see your practice, and hopefully make an appointment with your team.

Here’s where understanding SEO basics become extra important. You are not the only chiropractor, or physical therapist, or massage therapist on the internet. Thousands of other professionals are writing about the same things. So how do you make sure readers find your website first?

How to Improve SEO

  1. Learn how to do keyword searches. Keyword generator tools are readily available online, some are paid, and some are free. The paid options usually provide more detailed insights. However, starting with a free option will get you some idea of what internet users are searching for.
  2. Include keywords in your images. Did you know Google sees what you name your images and then uses that information to decide how relevant you are to a search? That’s right, so don’t leave your images as jpeg.033. Instead, rename them with a keyword relevant to the topic of your page or blog post.
  3. Be consistent. Google favors active pages to ones that haven’t been updated in several years. It is crucial if you work in the medical field to keep your web page not only active but also relevant. If information is outdated because of a new medical study or new understanding of a topic, address those changes on your site. Not only will it keep you among the top searches on Google, but it will ensure that the information on your website is trustworthy.
  4. Start a blog. The easiest way to keep your web page active and drive more traffic to your site through SEO is to post new blog entries regularly. For some, this might mean monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly. Personally, I recommend posting every week, especially if your website is new.
  5. Hire a professional. We’ve all been there in the early stages of a new business. We’re barely making enough to eat rice and beans for dinner, let alone hire subcontractors for content management and blog entries. However, as soon as you can, you need to hire a content manager or, at the very least, a copywriter that is well-versed in SEO techniques.

The Benefits of Hiring an SEO Expert

To get the most out of your website, you will have to put a lot of time and effort into the content. Think about the first four tips on this list. Do you have time for all that? If you have the extra time between patient appointments, picking the kids up from soccer practice, grocery shopping, updating your Instagram status, recording your podcast, then, by all means, DIY SEO. But eventually, one of those things will suffer, and it can’t be the time spent in your practice or with your family. It’s going to be your online content nine times out of ten. In fact, not having enough time is the biggest reason why healthcare workers don’t blog.

Hiring an SEO expert that writes compelling, motivating content for your website while helping improve your ranking on Google will allow you to spend your time where it’s most important.
